Herein please find our annual e-newsletter in recognition of April 24th’s Corrosion Awareness Day with the latest on the people and activities that make up our federation. All 20 of our working parties of corrosion specialty areas have evolved organically over time in response to the ever-changing environmental, economic and ecological conditions under which we all operate nowadays, supported by our Science and Technology Advisory Committee, administered through our London, Paris and Frankfurt-based secretariats and sustained by our member societies and corrosion experts like you, who are an essential part of our corrosion community.

The European Federation of Corrosion is the biggest corrosion organisation in Europe and one of the largest in the world, representing over 30 national corrosion, engineering and materials societies with members from 25 European countries and an increasing number of international members from outside of Europe. Its three European secretariats are based in London, Paris and Frankfurt and are dedicated to advancing the science and engineering of corrosion and protection of materials by promoting cooperation in Europe through international collaboration. EUROCORR®, The European Corrosion Congress, is the EFC’s flagship event and is hosted every year by a member society in their respective European country.
Professor Lorenzo Fedrizzi was elected EFC President back in January 2013. His selection was based upon his intense commitment to EFC activities over the years, particularly his highly successful former 12 year chairmanship of Working Party 14 on Coatings, one of the most important and popular sessions at the EFC’s annual EUROCORR conference. He previously held the position of EFC Vice-President and succeeds Professor Philippe Marcus who served as EFC president for the past 2 terms. Lorenzo Fedrizzi is a full professor of Materials Science and Technology at the University of Udine, Italy where he teaches Composite Materials Science and Technology and Corrosion. He is head of the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Environment at the University of Udine where he is also the Director of the Masters program in Metallurgical Engineering. He is a member of the Executive Council of the “National Inter-university Consortium for Material Science and Technology” (INSTM) and of the “Corrosion Centre” of the “Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia” (AIM). He sits on the Editorial Board of “Progress in Organic Coatings”, “Corrosion Engineering Science and Technology” and “Materials and Corrosion”. His main scientific interests are corrosion protection by organic, metallic and ceramic coatings. As EFC President, he is a member of the International Scientific Committee for EUROCORR and continues as an active member of Working Party 14’s Workshop "Application of Electrochemical Techniques to Organic Coatings"
The EFC welcomes on board our newest members:
VOM Belgium: The Belgian Association for Surface Treatment based in Leuven is set up to expand and link the know-how and experience of its members which are comprised of mostly small and medium-sized companies with common interests in joint projects and the end-goal of building networks between industry and research institutes. Its 300 members consist of subcontractors, surface-treatment users, suppliers of both, products and equipment as well as universities and research centers situated in both the French and Dutch speaking parts of Belgium. VOM covers all activities in the field, starting from the pre-treatment to the finishing of a product including electroplating, painting, powder coating, vacuum depositions, and metal spraying, with special attention paid to related topics such as corrosion, quality, environment, health and safety. All of these activities are carried out through conferences, technical lectures, company visits, one-day courses and specialty, tailor-made courses. Every two years VOM organises EUROFINISH, the European Trade Fair for surface-treatment technology and publishes its own monthly magazine VOM INFO containing announcements and presentations of the latest developments.
SOCIEMAT: Sociedad Espanola de Materiales (The Spanish Materials Society) is based in Madrid. Its goal is the scientific, engineering and technological development of materials within an educational framework and an industrial application through the promotion and dissemination of important research and development work being carried out in Spain in collaboration with government, local, national and international research and development programmes. The overall objective of these activities is to promote cooperation in the field of research and development of materials and to establish within the existing infrastructure business partnerships to foster coordination and cooperation with entities working in the field of materials. SOCIEMAT also develops educational programmes in the areas of materials science engineering, including the organisation of courses, workshops, conferences and seminars. The society also publishes newsletters and participates in the Madrid Science Fair, Materials Week and provides foundation contribution and national Awards in the field of materials science.
News from Working Parties
Dr ir J.M.C. (Arjan) Mol becomes New Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) Chairman
Dr. Arjan Mol obtained his MSc-degree at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the Delft University of Technology (DUT) back in 1996. His MSc-thesis focused on the post-forming properties (including corrosion properties) of glass fiber-metal laminates (GLARE) after deformation processing. His PhD degree was awarded by the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department of the DUT where he studied the effects of microstructural variations in aluminium alloy surfaces on filiform corrosion properties. He continued his career as project and team leader of ‘Structural lifetime of building and civil engineering structures’ for 6 years at the Dutch Applied Research Organisation TNO. In 2006 he returned to DUT-MSE where he is now Associate Professor of ‘Corrosion Technology and Electrochemistry’. His research field focuses on Local electrochemical analysis of corrosion mechanisms, Interfacial bonding of organic coatings on metal (oxide) surfaces and Multifunctional eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors and evaluation of smart coatings. He has published over 75 papers in international peer-refereed scientific journals, 6 book chapters and over 80 international conference proceeding papers. He chaired the International Aluminium Surface Science and Technology Symposium ASST2009, was a member of the ASST2012 Sorrento Organizing Committee and will be again for ASST2015 in Madeira. Since 2011 Dr. Mol has been the Representative Member of the International Corrosion Council ICC for Holland, serves as member of the International Scientific Committee for the EFC’s annual EUROCORR congress, and is the Working Party Chairman for WP 8 ‘Physico-chemical methods of Corrosion Testing”.
Dr Pierangela Cristiani has a degree in biology from the Università degli Studi di Milano and more than fifteen years’ experience in research, project development and teaching in the field of microbial corrosion and biofouling prevention in the industrial sector. She is Project Leader at RSE – Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico S.p.A., an Italian state research company working in the energy sector based in Milan, and author of more than 100 international publications including 6 book chapters and more than 50 journal papers/peer reviewed proceedings. Her research activities are carried out in collaboration with a number of Italian and international universities. Recently her research focus has enlarged to include the study of possible positive feedback arising from the interaction between bacteria and materials in microbial fuel cells. She has led the research for the Sub-program 3 – Cooling systems in energy facilities in the Marie Curie action “Biocorrosion” (FP7 program PEOPLE - UE) and her studies continue in the direction of developing innovative microbial corrosion methods which are deemed crucial for the creation and exploitation of new bio-electrochemical technology.
Dr. Steve Paterson is the Principal Technical Expert in the Materials in Oil & Gas Operations of Shell Projects & Technology. He graduated from Imperial College London with a BSc (Eng.) and PhD in Metallurgy and joined Shell in 1981 where he has held various roles related to materials and corrosion in the exploration & production, refining and chemical businesses. He has worked in The Netherlands, Malaysia, and Norway and in 1999 returned to the U.K. to work for OIS where he was responsible for the delivery of integrity and inspection services to Talisman Energy. He has been with Shell in Aberdeen since 2001, becoming head of materials and corrosion engineering for Shell Exploration & Production Europe in July 2006. In 2013 he became the Head of Materials, Corrosion & Inspection for Shell Upstream in the U.K. & Ireland and in March 2014 moved to Amsterdam in his new role.
WP 21 CORROSION OF ARCHEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS
Dr. Delphine Neff studied material sciences at the Polytech Engineering Faculty in Orléans, France, and completed her Masters degree in Physics as applied to archaeology at the University of Bordeaux. She specialised in the study of long term corrosion of archaeological iron during her PhD-thesis at the Pierre Süe Laboratory of the French Atomic Agency / CNRS research institutes. She received her doctorate degree in Materials Science in 2003 upon which she took up post-doctoral positions at the Indian Institute of Technology of Kanpur India in 2004 and successively at the Pierre and Marie Curie University (UPMC) Paris 6 in 2005, continuing her research on the understanding of long term corrosion mechanisms. Since 2006 she has been a research scientist at the French Atomic Agency responsible for the corrosion activities of the Laboratory for Archaeomaterials and Prediction of Alteration (LAPA).
EFC’s newly inaugurated!
is chaired by Theo Hack, Senior Expert for Corrosion and Corrosion Protection at Airbus Group Innovations, the research organisation of the Airbus Group (former European Aeronautics Defence and Space Company, EADS) based in Munich, Germany. He received his Master’s Degree in Materials Science at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen and started his industrial career in 1986 at Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm - Central Laboratories (Deutsche Aerospace). From 1994 onwards he was the manager for corrosion at Daimler Benz Research, respectively DaimlerChrysler AG, in the Research and Technology division where he was involved in projects for automotive, rail systems and aerospace. Since 2001 he has been the acting expert on corrosion and corrosion protection for the EADS research organisation, EADS Innovation Works. He has many years’ experience in corporate, national and international research projects dealing with corrosion testing and the development of substrates and corrosion protection systems for lightweight structures, and has been the coordinator for a number of European research projects on corrosion testing methods, corrosion simulation and new corrosion inhibition concepts. His major focus is on the development of new corrosion resistant aluminium alloys, the design and improvement of protection systems and the development of corrosion test methods. He is also an expert on the impact of microstructure on corrosion behaviour, stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue of aerospace materials.

EFC-appointed publisher for our noteworthy EFC “Greenbook” Series, Woodhead Publishing based in Cambridge, England, was acquired by Elsevier in August 2013. Woodhead’s extensive Materials Science collection covering key research on corrosion and a wide range of engineering materials including composites, metals, ceramics and polymers, has been enhanced with Elsevier’s content.

WP 1 Corrosion in Scale Inhibition announces that the “International Journal for Corrosion on Scale Inhibition” (IJCSI) is now the official Journal of EFC WP1. The journal will be used for networking and information exchange on Corrosion and Scale Inhibition matters including announcements of conferences, courses, new research issues, etc. IJCSI (www.ijcsi.pro) will also be directly linked to WP1’s webpages found on the EFC website.
WP 21 Corrosion of Archeological and Historical Artifacts’ newly appointed Working Party Chair, Dr. Delphine Neff will be proposing at this year’s WP 21 EUROCORR session in Pisa a special issue of the EFC Publication “Materials and Corrosion” which will cover the corrosion/alteration of objects or materials from historical sites (metals including glass, ceramics, stone, etc.) and the scientific approach developed specifically for these materials.

Theme: Improving materials durability: from cultural heritage to industrial applications
This September, EUROCORR 2014 will be proudly hosted by our Italian member society AIM, the Italian Metallurgical Association, in Pisa, Italy. The theme will focus on the critical role that corrosion science, technology and engineering plays in extending the life of materials from both technical-scientific and practical applications starting with materials used in the past up to those destined for modern industry.
Theme: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Corrosion happens everywhere
ASMET, the Austrian Society for Metallurgy and Materials will be your hosts in Graz, a delightful student city located in a forested region southwest of the Alps and 200 km from Vienna. This conference will assert the critical role of corrosion science, technology and engineering in extending the lifecycle of materials in different fields of applications (earth, fire, water, air).

CEFRACOR, the French Center for Anticorrosion, will be hosting you for EUROCORR 2016 in Montpellier, capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region on the south coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea and neighbouring the delightful region of Provence.

Prague, an architectural, musical and cultural jewel of a city will be the location for EUROCORR 2017 which will be jointly hosted by The Czech Association of Corrosion Engineers and DECHEMA e.V.

This workshop will exchange research results and expertise on the high temperature degradation of materials under conditions found in the refinery, petrochemical and chemical industries.
Topics will include:
The aim of this joint EUROCORR 2014 session is to bring together materials specialists, manufacturers and end users to share and unite their knowledge on these topics. Combined polymer and metal materials are typically found in modern piping systems as sanitary and heating installations are largely made up from a combination of polymer and metal components. As well, networks in the water and gas supplies often consist of sub-networks made up of a combination of polymers with a second series of sub-networks consisting of metals. This complex operating environment will be explored via presentations and ensuing discussion from the academic and industrial worlds focusing on the following topics:
Although polymers are part of organic coatings, the majority of the works presented in the coatings session usually focus on the interfacial properties of coatings and the development of new coating systems, while the research results presented in the polymers session concentrate predominantly on the application and behaviour of structural polymer materials. In an attempt to bridge the gap between those working with organic coatings on metal surfaces and those working with polymer materials, the following topics will be addressed at this joint session:
The Automotive and Aerospace industries are both facing the challenges of providing lightweight designs at reasonable costs in order to satisfy current requirements for improving fuel efficiency and reducing environmental footprint. Vehicles in both sectors have a major impact on the environment in terms of air quality, greenhouse gases, water quality, use of natural resources and noise emissions.
The design of advanced lightweight structures are another important factor for the electro-mobility of automobiles and future aircraft in order to balance out the additional weight added by electric components and energy storage systems.
In this joint workshop the corrosion behaviour and corrosion protection challenges arising from the assembly of lightweight hybrid and mixed material land and air vehicles shall be addressed. Other aspects will also be examined including the use of materials such as Mg alloys or Titanium, galvanic corrosion protection measures and the corrosion behaviour of various joining methods as applicable to both industries.

This workshop will bring together representatives from academia and industry to present and discuss the various aspects of electronic corrosion issues, failure modes and mechanisms and will consider mitigation strategies including corrosion issues at the material, components, PCBA and device levels as well as enclosure concepts and important and specific corrosion issues related to various industrial sectors.
The agenda for this year’s WP 15 annual business meeting led by WP Chairman Dr. Francois Ropital will include presentations and an information exchange on “hot topics” concerning corrosion in the refinery industry including: high temperature hydrogen attack, sulfide stress corrosion cracking, stress relaxation cracking, inspection, monitoring, failure cases, stress relaxation cracking, corrosion by cooling waters and sulfide stress corrosion cracking amongst others.
The second part of the meeting will be to start planning for next year’s EUROCORR 2015 WP 15 including consideration of joint sessions and workshops, identify potential speakers to invite, receive proposals for new – or revision to – guidelines, organisation of the relevant taskforces and coordination with NACE STG groups.
Back by popular demand, this pre-EUROCORR 2014 course will once again be led by the esteemed Prof. Christofer Leygraf, winner of the 2013 European Corrosion Medal, and is designed for graduate students or researchers working in academic or industrial environments with an interest in materials science and engineering. Study and discussion of the interdisciplinary science of corrosion and the underlying chemistry and physics of the most important forms of metal corrosion in all its mechanistic and applied aspects will take place. The course is worth 7.5 ECTS points and is organised by KorrosionsCentrum™ (a collaboration between EFC Swedish Member Society Swerea KIMAB and KTH Stockholm) which will furnish most of the instructors who are renowned experts in their respective fields.

A Call for Papers: EUROCORR 2015, Graz, Austria:
Planned Joint Session of
It’s not too early to start preparing your presentation for next year’s planned joint session which will bring together academics and industrialists working with two topics that have recently become of major importance:
Both of these important topics are related to cathodic charging of materials in seawater that can result in hydrogen induced cracking. Recently evidence has proved that hydrogen embrittlement of precipitation hardening Ni-base alloys can take place and contributions concerning recounting and analysis of this phenomenon, including results from test programs and mechanisms are welcome. HISC guidelines have been in existence for several years now which may need to be updated. Contributions that will cover improved qualification test methods and design criteria, as well as mechanistic work are invited.

XIII International Corrosion Symposium
The symposium is jointly organised by Corrosion Association in Turkey and Fırat University Faculty of Technology.
