General Policy of WP 18 at European level
Tribo-corrosion is defined by ASTM International as "a form of solid surface alteration that involves the joint action of relatively moving mechanical contact with chemical reaction in which the result may be different in effect than either process acting separately". Tribo-corrosion is found in several engineering systems such as biomedical implants, pumps for chemicals, power generation plants, fretting corrosion, offshore installations, forming and many others. Tribocorrosion involves the interplay of two complex phenomena: friction and corrosion. Not surprisingly the overall rate of material transformation is rarely just the sum of corrosion and wear taken individually. Due to the complex interplay between mechanical and chemical phenomena tribocorrosion is still not fully understood and its control in practice still relies on empirical approaches. The WP18 was created in 2002 with the aim to stimulate scientific exchanges among people from industry and academia interested in tribocorrosion and to gather and disseminate information on related engineering needs and opportunities. This task is getting more and more essential as the field of tribocorrosion experiences a significant scientific development (period 1996-2006: ≈ 90 papers, 2006-2016: ≈ 400 papers 2 reference books). Noteworthy achievements count, among others, the establishment of robust, commercially available tribo-electrochemical techniques, the identification of key mechanisms related to corrosion reactions and mechanical material responses and the establishment of predictive models linking tribocorrosion to specific materials and electrochemical properties, mechanical loadings and environment chemistry. This rapid scientific development makes the WP18 mission even more important as a framework for communication among scientists, as a platform for the dissemination of the new insights acquired on typical aspects of tribocorrosion and as the driving force for the recognition of their technological potential for developing new optimized materials or products gaining relevance. Accordingly, the main tasks for WP18 are:
- To promote the worldwide dissemination of the concept of tribocorrosion.
- To create links among European and non European entities active in tribocorrosion and related fields.
- To promote education.
- To provide, through its members, technical support for targeted actions.
