WEBINAR: Corrosion in geothermal energy- GeoSteelCor

26 June 2025, 10:30 - 16:00 CEST (Paris Time)

(EFC event  No. 535)

Organized by EFC in partnership with CEFRACOR

For the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, investment in the infrastructure of green energy sources is necessary. Geothermal energy is one of the promising ways to achieve this objective by delivering thermal and electrical power. Due to the high corrosiveness and scaling ability of geothermal fluids, the selection of appropriate metallic materials and inhibitors is a challenge for the safety and reliability of the equipment used for geothermal energy sources.
The objectives of this webinar are to exchange on knowledge of the corrosion, scaling, inhibition mechanisms, the selection of proper remedies (as materials, inhibitors) and their application for reliable developments of geothermal energy production. Some achievements of GeoSteelCor project funded by ANR (French National Research Agency) will also be presented.

Focus areas

The Working Party 26 (since December 2023 - previously: EFC Task Force) activities are based around materials and corrosion issues related to the following areas of interest, each with an identified focus area coordinator who can be contacted for further information. The main aim of the Working Party is to provide coordination around these activities and to facilitate links with ongoing initiatives including those organised by WCO and EFC Working Parties.

Area of interest Coordinator
Hydrogen Gareth Hinds
Geothermal energy Marc Wilms (Working Party 13)
Wind, wave and tidal energy Steve Paterson
Green fuels  Francois Ropital (Working Party 15)
Electrochemical energy storage Bernard Normand
Solar technologies Polina Volovitch
Hydroelectric power to be confirmed
Micro-organisms Pierangela Cristiani (Working Party 10)

Mission

Green and low carbon energy technologies have emerged as a strategic priority:

  • to reduce the global carbon footprint,
  • to limit the impact of materials production on the environment,
  • to decrease CO2 emissions and improve air quality.

The transition to new energy technologies to achieve these priorities is vital for the sustainability of our environment and society. The task force activities will focus on corrosion issues in what are often called “sustainable”, “green” or “near-neutral carbon” technologies related to:

  • use of hydrogen,
  • geothermal energy,
  • wind, wave and tidal energy,
  • green fuels,
  • electrochemical energy storage,
  • photovoltaic and thermal solar technologies,
  • hydroelectric power,
  • nuclear power,
  • carbon capture & storage.

Our principal goal is to provide the opportunity to exchange information, develop guidelines and promote mitigation strategies for corrosion in the new energy sector. The will involve collaboration and information exchange between academia and industry in order to assist in the development of solutions to reduce the impact of energy generation and usage on our environment.
