Long-time member Renate Kilian passed away

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Renate Kilian, a cherished colleague and friend at Framatome GmbH in Germany. Renate passed away on August 7 peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, kindness and dedication that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of working with her. Renate was a long-standing and respected member of the WP 4. Her contributions went far beyond her professional achievements — she was a source of encouragement and inspiration to her colleagues, offering her wisdom, guidance and unwavering support whenever it was needed. Renate’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of her family, friends, and colleagues, but her memory will live on through the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed by all.

2024

The 2024 Honorary Medal of the WP 4 for outstanding contributions to corrosion science and engineering in the nuclear field has been awarded to

Dirk Engelberg

The University of Manchester, UK

Dirk's distinguished career and groundbreaking research in corrosion science have significantly advanced our understanding of corrosion mechanisms and its implications for nuclear engineering. His pioneering work has encompassed a broad spectrum of topics, including stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, materials characterization, and corrosion electrochemistry, with a particular focus on the mitigation of material degradation for radwaste storage, nuclear reactors and related infrastructure. He is also at the forefront developing innovative techniques for rapid corrosion screening and surface decontamination. In addition to his groundbreaking research, Dirk has also demonstrated continuing commitment to mentorship, education, and student training. As a dedicated educator and advisor, he has inspired and guided a long list of students, early-career researchers, engineers, and scientists in the field of corrosion science and materials engineering. His mentorship has not only nurtured the talents of future generations but has also fostered a culture of excellence and innovation within the corrosion community. He has held terrific lectures in all three editions of WP 4’s Nuclear Corrosion Summer School and is well engaged in several EFC WPs and communities (e.g., he is Vice-Chair of WP 5 Environment Sensitive Fracture; co-organised a special session on Hydrogen Challenges in Energy & Transport Systems).

  • EFC ‘Green Book’ Series No. 71: Corrosion Modelling with Cellular Automata
Edited by Damien Féron (Université Paris-Saclay, CEA, France), Dung Di Caprio (CNRS, IRCP, France)

Woodhead Publishing, March 2024, 230 pages, ISBN: 978-0-443-13786-0

The current book bridges the gap between finer scales based on atomic physics and the larger-scale based on physico-chemical properties of materials and their environments. The book describes the simulation and modeling of corrosion phenomena by cellular automata and underlines the collaborative and interdisciplinary relationships that underpin them. It explores the major achievements that have been performed to date, covers basic knowledge on cellular automata and corrosion phenomena, and includes sections on CA modeling of generalized and uniform corrosion in 2D and 3D under various conditions, including aqueous environments and high temperature processes. Finals sections present examples on the use of cellular automata for modeling localized corrosion as well as recent developments on intergranular corrosion. There is also a review on the use of CA for modeling pitting corrosion.

In 2017, the EFC’s Working Party (WP) 4 on Nuclear Corrosion marked its 50th anniversary with a workshop comprising invited talks from renowned experts covering almost the entire range of nuclear corrosion topics. As a result of these workshop contributions, Nuclear Corrosion: Research, Progress and Challenges is being published as part of the “Green Book” series of the EFC. This book will build upon the foundations of the very first book published in this series in 1989 (Number 1—A Working Party Report on Corrosion in the Nuclear Industry). Since that publication, this WP has guided and supported the research and application of results in the broad field of nuclear corrosion.
This newest volume provides an overview on the state-of-the-art of research in some of the most important areas of nuclear corrosion. The chapters covered include ageing phenomena in light water reactors, reprocessing plants, as well as in nuclear waste disposal, supercritical water, and liquid metal systems. This book will be a vital resource for researchers and engineers working within the nuclear field in both academic and industrial environments.
